Places to avoid going, and the places with the ran down houses? I am looking to move to los angeles with my bf, but we might both be moving to long beach where he works..Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Also, Im looking at condos in addition to houses.

I lived on Orange street many many years ago and it was bad then..it borders on Compton and Paramount, both pretty risky neighborhoods. I would suggest moving closer to Redondo or Huntington Beach

you really cant "avoid" the bad, its just part of the city, but the closer to the ocean the better the living, in most cases, but then get ready to open your wallets., as for places not to go to, sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.,you never know., there are plenty of places besides LBC to reside in as long as you have a car. hope you become the next Angeleno..see ya in traffic.

Stay away from North Long Beach around Artesia Blvd. Aslso stay away from the the 90804, 90813, 90744, 90806, 90810, and 90807 zip codes. Pretty much everything from Redondo Ave, to the 710 using Broadway as your cutoff. I wouldnt recommend Alamitos Beach either, its Ok, but forget about street parking if you need one. Its actually easier to tell you the parts to go to, I would recommend Downtown by the Pike, lots of new condos recently built, the traffic circle, Bixby Knolls, Belmont shore, Naples, Junipero Beach, and by Long Beach State are pretty nice. I am not sure where you are coming from, but there are lots of houses for sale in Long Beach right now, just be prepared to pay a decent amount of money for a home, even rents are a little high.

I moved to Long from Michigan 6 years ago and love it here. The people are down to earth, not the typical snobby people that you will find in Orange County and Hollywood/West LA. I think Long Beach has more nice than bad areas. Long Beach is a city, so you will find bad parts as in any city in the world. I am a social worker for LA county based in Long Beach, so I am well aware of the bad areas of Long Beach and every other city in LA county for that matter. The parts of Long Beach that I would stay away from living are North Long Beach and the Downtown area near the 710 freeway.. The best places to live are Belmont Shore (young area with shops, resturants, bars and the beach, very quaint area, my favorite area in Long Beach. My brother just moved here and got a 1 bedroom apt in Belmont Shore for $1300 right by the beach. Downtown by the Pike is also a nice area, there are a lot of new condo buildings, shops, resturants and bars. You can rent a one bedroom in this area for $1300 too. Inland Long Beach, you have Bixby knolls (a residential area a few miles from the beach), The area by Cal State Long Beach, and nice residential areas up Los Coyotes to Carson street. Good Luck and dont let people scare you about Long Beach. It is a great city with lots to do, culture, and great people to meet.
