About What's a good time to drive the 405 to Irvine from Long Beach

What's a good time to drive the 405 to Irvine from Long Beach?
I just moved to Long Beach, but I work in Irvine, off the 73. I left this morning at 7:20, and it took me 85 minutes to get here. I have some flexibility with my start time at work, so when should I be leaving home to get here without sitting in traffic for half an hour or more? 8:30? 9:00? Or am I just doomed like everyone else?

You're doomed! That fwy is killer in the AM. Leave 2 hours before or move closer. I'd find a chic around Irvine and bunk with her.

doomed, sadly.. anytime from 7-9 is pretty bad.. I think before 7 might be a little bit beterr, but for the most part..

About Where to live when working in Long Beach, CA

Where to live when working in Long Beach, CA?
Hi everyone, I am starting a new job in Long Beach and will be working near 1 World Trade Center. After living in New York for the last 5 years, I have my heart set on living near the beach. I am a single, 35-year old male and I would love to live a few blocks from the beach in one of those beach type communities that also has a decent amount of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, etc. And of course I want to live in the safest place possible. I am looking for a rental at this point and lets just assume that price of rent isn't an issue as I will worry about that later. At this point I am more interested in the best possible location to live. Some of my friends have suggested areas around Long Beach such as Seal Beach, Naples, Broadside Heights and areas outside of Long Beach such as Manhattan Beach, Huntington, Marina Del Rey and Newport Beach. I don't mind a commute as long as I am not stuck in horrendous amounts of traffic, but would that be possible if for example, I was working in Long Beach, but commuting from Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey or Orange County? I guess I wouldn't want to deal with a commute longer then 45 minutes. One of my friends said that I might be able to live in Orange County and take the metrolink into Long Beach, but she wasn't sure if the metrolink serves Long Beach or not. anyway, any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i live in huntington. its a very nice area with a really nice pier/beach/stores downtown. long beach is about 15 minutes away. look it up on mapquest and see how far it is for u though. newport is a lot nicer, but more expensive and is farther from long beach. seal beach is in between huntington and long beach and theres nice places there too. personally, i think long beach is kind of slummy. not bad, just not a "nice area" like huntington or seal. not many people use trains around here, most use cars. although some do ride trains i guess but nowhere near the amount new york does haha. also if u go onto google maps, u can look at the "live view" of the actual street. look up the main street and pacific coast highway(pch) intersection in huntington. thats the downtown/beach area
2 :
Naples is a quiet upscale neighborhood in Long Beach. It's close to Belmont Shore, also part of Long Beach, that you might enjoy. Plenty of bars, restaurants and traffic. Seal Beach is a great town to live in. Main Street is lined with shops, bars and restaurants and it has a more chill feeling than neighboring Huntington Beach that has torn down everything that once made it a cute beach town. Seal Beach has kept its old-school beach town feeling. Sunset Beach is also a tiny sliver of a beach town you might like. It's in between Seal Beach and Huntington Beach. Metrolink doesn't go to Long Beach. Public transportation is slower than driving. Never heard of Broadside Heights. Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach and Marina del Rey would mean horrible amounts of traffic and a commute longer than 45 minutes. With any neighborhood close to the beach you will find parking to be nonexistent during the summer. Beach-side areas are older and they have on the street parking. Any neighborhood close to bars and restaurants will also have a lack of parking. You will have better luck looking on craigslist.com for apartments. In the old parts of town, which the coastal areas usually are, they have small, under 20 unit apartment buildings not complexes. Quite few places only put For Rent signs in front too.
3 :
No, the Metrolink does not serve Long Beach from Orange County. The MTA Blue line does connect Long Beach to downtown LA. I would suggest you live in one of the apartment communities in Long Beach. There are several that are just a few blocks from the beach.
4 :
If you don't want to drive in traffic, stay off the 405. It's called the 405 because you go 4 o' 5 miles per hour. Start looking in Huntington Beach, it's close. Seal Beach, Naples, Broadside Heights, Bixby Knolls are all good. Heck, you can even get a condo around Pine Avenue if you want a little nightlife. The metrolink doesn't go to Long Beach. It goes from OC to downtown LA. THen you take the Blue Line light rail (through Compton & Watts) to Long Beach. Your choice. I wouldn't. Check out lalife.com to check out pricing and safety of areas around there. One thing you'll find about the LA area, it's not like back east. You don't have many areas where people walk around, shop, etc. SoCal can best be described as endless suburbia, mixed in with shopping malls, commercial areas, and strip malls.
5 :
If you're renting there is a lot of stuff available really close to 1 World Trade Center and walking distance to the beach if not on the beach.

About Where should I live around long beach

Where should I live around long beach?
Hi, My husband has new job in Long beach and I work in San Dimas. We are planning to find a place in-between/around either of this places. We are ready to drive 30-40 miles. We would be renting apartment. Any suggestions?

Not a good idea near the coast just because we live in an active pacific region where earthquake activity is always a threat.
2 :
Are you trying to find somewhere in the middle? maybe fullerton, brea anaheim would be ideal then
3 :
if u are looking for a place with Indian food/amenities, you can consider Palms/Culver City if u want to move central to LA. Or else if u want to keep the commute shorter or bypass workday 405 traffic, then choose Hawthorne or Artesia/Lakewood. Nearer LA will be more expensive to rent. I wud expect more than San Dimas. *sorry i meant Hawthorne blvd in Torrance (above); not Hawthorne City which is a bit further north.
4 :
I would look into Brea, La Habra, La Mirada, Whittier, or Fullerton. Those are nice places in the middle.
5 :
Long Beach has some great neighborhoods to live in. the good areas are in the south and south/west portions of the city. these include(naples, park estates, belmont shore/heights, los altos. Other cities you should consider are neighborhing los alamitos and cypress( orange county). Both very safe

About Getting a job at 17 with no prior work experience in Long Beach, CA

Getting a job at 17 with no prior work experience in Long Beach, CA.?
I've seen a lot of this type of question, but most of them haven't been very helpful. When I turned 17 it hit me that I only had a year left of being a kid and it freaked me out a little bit. At that time (October) I decided that I should get as much job experience as possible before I turn 18, so that I could have the option of moving out and supporting myself if I needed too (which I would have to if I wasn't going to college). Well, I live in Long Beach, CA and "surprise" I wasn't magically hired within the first month of looking. It's January now, and almost every single place I go tells me that they're not planning on hiring for a while (since they just hired people for seasonal employment). I was hoping that after the holidays a lot of people would quit, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I am working on getting my high school diploma through a home-school like thing that gives me a lot of flexibility time-wise, so I'm willing to work anytime between the opening and closing hours of a store. I've been discouraged lately, because my parents are starting to push me to get a job as well, and are beginning to... give me motivation in their own special way. They've already set up a curfew of 10 every night, taken away my computer access at home (I'm at the library right now). and "forbidden" (that sounds so harsh :P) friends from staying over past 8:00. Well, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know

Culver's minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers permit. I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long. Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring. What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at. Try local grocery stores, pizza parlors, retail stores, fast food restaurants.

you are looking at spending 3 hours a day driving..maybe more on bad days. the 91 freeway sucks unless you use the "fast track". The fast track is like a toll road. Last time i check it was about 4 dollars one way
3 :
That's going to be a long drive. The main freeway that connects Corona and Newport is the 91 AKA the "91 Parking lot." Good luck trying to make it to work in under an hour. If you want to be in the office by 8 yo should try to make it on the 91 by 530 am because it starts t oget packed around 6.

Would it be hard to live in Belmont Shores, Long Beach and work in Downtown LA?

not really you could drive to one of the blue lines stop park and ride (willow, wardlowor artiesa station then take the blue line into los angeles or you could look into getting a EZ pass (which is good on Both Long beach and metro lines) and LBT has direct connects either via Passport A and D and Line 131 to the Wardlow station
2 :
Whoa, it would be such a long drive between Belmont and Downtown Long Beach. You would be using so much gas to drive back and forth. However, I recommend you use the L.A. metro system on the Blue Line. It takes about 50 minutes (not 2 hours like the other person said. i mean, why would they make a metro train that would take 2 hours to meet your destination?!) to from the Long Beach Transit Mall in downtown to Downtown LA and would only cost $5 for a metro pass. However, it would be pretty awkward if you wore a business suit on a Blue Line. If you choose not to go on metro, I think it would be perfectly fine if you go by car since its quicker than metro.
3 :
It's about 25 miles and will probably take you at least an hour in traffic, if not longer.
4 :
Welllll...possibly. Driving back and forth everyday would get to be a grind and expensive because of gas and if you have to pay for parking downtown. Public transportation, i.e., taking the bus from Belmont Shore to the Metro Blue Line would also get to be a drag. I've taken the Blue Line from the Carson Station to downtown LA and it took 2 hours each way. Since you would be starting further away the trip would be almost 2.5 hours each way for you. The economy is bad right now and finding any work is a miracle. Weigh your options and compare what you will be making to the time and money spent getting to and from work. You don't want to just break even. Good luck to you!
5 :
No I have friends who live in Belmont Shores and work in Downtown LA. She takes the LA Metro train into work and it puts her basically at her work doorstep. Try this website: www.metro.net

BAH is based off of YOUR duty station. I would be leery of spending that money, as you well know, that once they catch on, they will take it back.
2 :
1. There is no such thing as geo bachelor, unless your on unaccompanied orders. 2. Your BAH will be based on your duty station. 3. It will be up to your command, whether they allow you to live in the barracks while getting bah Mainly due to the occupancy rate of the barracks But you can figure on NOT being allowed to live in the barracks.
3 :
No you are on accompanied orders so as long as you are stationed out of Little Creek it will be based on that zip code. You are going IA and if it for over 6 months you can right before you leave have the BAH amended to where she is living if it is authorized. They will allow that for some Navy personnel who are going IA for over 6 months.

About What are some decent cities in between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California

What are some decent cities in between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California?
We currently live in Houston Texas and are considering moving to California. My husband will be working in Long Beach, and I will be working in or near the Los Angeles area. We have 2 children, an 8 year old and an almost 2 year old, so decent nice neighborhoods are important! Thanks!
Los Angeles - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Oh, there are lots. Downey, Norwalk, Lakewood, Torrance, etc. It really all depends on where you will be working in "the Los Angeles area".
2 :
It's just not like that here. What you're asking for doesn't exist around LA. I finally figured that out after visiting enough cities. In other cities, you can be 10 miles out of downtown, find a nice little place with a yard for a reasonable price, and live comfortably with a commute you can handle. However, LA is not like that at all. It defines the term "urban sprawl". If you start in downtown LA, you have to go more than 100 miles in any direction to find anything resembling small town. It's strip malls, suburban tracts, and commercial development for at least 100 miles. And when you get past that 100 miles, you're either in the desert, Mexico, the San Joaquin Valley, or Central California. The LA-Long Beach Metro area is one solid mass of residential, commercial, and industrial sections. Yes, there are cities in between, but from the air, it all looks like one solid mass with no open space in between. Sorry, but when you move here, you're going to have to adjust to the reality that is LA. I can recommend nicer places to live, but it's not going to have that "small town" atomosphere. One thing about living in LA is that everybody does their own thing... there's a casual indifference about the people who live here. That means you can be yourself, whatever that may be, but don't expect a homey, communitiy atmosphere like in other parts of the country. Sorry, but that's just the way it is here. You might want to start looking in La Mirada, Cerritos, Bellflower, and Artesia. These have good school districts. LAUSD is generally a mess. Long Beach isn't much better (Mrs. Obviousman is a teacher). Start with those areas and see what you can find. Like I always say, LA is not for everybody. If you can't deal with that, don't move here.
3 :
Where in Los Angeles are you referring to? If by neighborhoods you mean the typical "newly built homes," "cul-de-sac setting," and "everybody has fancy cars in front of their garages," then there's VERY LITTLE of that here in LA. If you want one of those types of neighborhoods, expect to cough up A LOT. Bottom Line: Stay in Houston.
4 :
Houston has a huge amount of urban sprawl and crappy traffic so you won't be shocked to find the same thing here. If you're looking for a Woodlands or Clear Lake type area you won't find it between LBC and LA. Irvine in Orange County comes close, but that is the opposite direction you want to go. La Canada Flintridge would also compare, but that is seriously very far from LBC. If you can afford it ($$$$) I would suggest Rancho Palos Verdes/Rolling Hills. It's a very nice hilly area right on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Rolling Hills even has horse trails and acreages. There is a lot of tree cover which makes it feel like you're not in the middle of Los Angeles and you have some privacy. Your kids aren't old enough yet, but Palos Verdes High School sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean. They are supposed to have a good school district.
5 :
my choice would be cypress really nice nieghborhood low robbery and lots of park nearby
6 :
Long Beach and parts of the city of LA touch. The area directly north of Long Beach all the way to downtown is the worst area to live in the cuty. But the city of LA is so huge, you really have to be more specific about where you will be working than "The Los Angeles Area". This only describes an area about 100 x 50 miles.

My advice is to get a job first, THEN move to an area to reduce your commute. It won't help to work in Long Beach if you have a job in Chatsworth. With the economy in its present state, you're going to have a very difficult time finding a position. People are eating out WAY less, and restaurant employees are getting laid off or getting their hours cut back. According to what I see on TV, it looks like Gordon Ramsey is hiring... but the interview process is h3ll, from what I see.
2 :
Because of the recession the restaurant/hospitality business is hurting pretty bad in So Cal. In Long Beach we like our dive bars and restaurants that have been around for 50+ years. There are some nice places though and they aren't chain restaurants. Try Tracht's at the Renaissance Hotel. Suzanne Tracht is the executive chef and she also has another popular restaurant in LA called Jar. Lasher's and Christy's Ristorante are both nice, upscale restaurants in my neighborhood. They've both been in business for over 10 years, which is good in that biz. At Last Cafe is also worth looking into. The place is new and very popular since they serve great food at a good price. Michaels on Naples is an upscale restaurant with a modern atmosphere and good food. Nico's, Kelly's and Fora are all within a block of Michaels and they also offer an upscale and romantic experience. Naples is an upscale neighborhood in LB. Utopia is in the funky East Village Arts District close to downtown. They specialize in California cuisine and the restaurant is in a cool refurbished old building. 555 East is an old school fine dining steak house. I'm sure there are some places I'm forgetting about. I love to cook and was just thinking of the places that might offer you a good cooking experience. I'm not sure about the personal chef need here. Good luck to you.

I used to mow lawns and throw newspapers when I was an early teen. You can probably find a neighbor or two that would pay you for lawn and/or garden care. You can also check with your high school counselor on jobs that might be available to you. A high school counselor might be able to direct you to prospective employers in your area.

To my knowledge, to work legally in CA, you have to be 15 and one half and have a work permit. Even then you are limited to how many hours and how late you are legally allowed to work. Check with you're school's guidance counselor for the permit and job openings. See if there are intern-type positions in your area. Other than the fast food venues, just have to pound the pavement.
5 :
Just ask your parents for money. That's what I did when I was 15.

I'm 20 and I just moved out to Long Beach, Ca and i was wondering where I should work. I already work fulltime but im looking for something else. Preferably something that pays more than min. wage. I need to buy a few things for my apartment and i need to bring in some extra cash. Any ideas?

The answer to your question is that the possiblities in Long Beach are endless. It is a very large metropolitan city. As a twenty-year old, I'm assuming your experience is limited. I would suggest working at some of the more popular restaurants if you have waiting experience. There are a lot of tips to be made at places like the Yardhouse, PF Chang's, and Cafe Sevilla, especially on the weekends. Good luck!

Run an eBay business. (Buy and sell for more) (ex: buy $35 Nikes that would cost $80 at a marshalls and sell it for $60-70 on eBay)
